THE BATTLE OF BANGUI – Recce Story Night
Operation Vimbezela took place in the CAR (Central African Republic).
The SA contingent was about two hundred strong. It consisted of paratroopers from 1 Parachute Battalion as well as an Special Forces team from 5 Reconnaissance Regiment. They were supported by members of 7 Medical Battalion.
On 22 April 2013 the South African elements were involved in running battles against the Seleka rebels. They were estimated to be more than 4000 strong at the time as they attacked the South African base.
The battles lasted more than twelve hours. Thirteen brave paratroopers died standing their ground to defend the base. Two more succumbed to their wounds later. Twenty seven men were wounded.
The three SA Military Units were bestowed battle honours for Bangui. They were 1 Parachute Battalion, 5 Reconnaissance Regiment and 7 Medical Battalion. This allows them to add the word Bangui to their unit unit flags and colours.
Come listen to the role of the SA Special Forces team involved in this prolonged battle. These men, who helped fire off over ten tons of ammunition, will tell the story. Many decorations for bravery were rightly awarded.
SA Special Forces memorabilia will be on sale.
