Duku Duku base was situated in the Duku Duku forests of Northern KwaZulu/Natal, and the base was named after it's location.

Duku Duku was a training area under the Training Wing of 1 Reconnaissance Regiment and it was also the location at which 5 Reconnaissance Commando was originally based for a short period  of time prior to being relocated to Phalaborwa.

Duku Duku was primarily used as the location where the Special Forces Pre Selection and Selection courses, took place, in addition to a number of other training courses during the Basic Operators Training Cycle.

Certain advanced courses were conducted there too.

The base consisted of mostly pre-fabricated houses, bungalows and other rudimentary structures.
